RED HOOK AND THE PEOPLE’s CLIMATE MARCH

OUR MISSION — Red Hook, Brooklyn was one of the communities hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The community has been working since then to increase preparedness, improve resiliency and build on our capacity to address our community’s need. We recently completely a Long-Term Recovery Process and have been engaged in many processes to think about how to rebuild.

Something we haven’t addressed in our community is the role climate change played in the event. We cannot simply be satisfied with bracing ourselves for the next time. We have to organize ourselves, for our communities, families and the young people who represent our future. We must identify the root causes of climate change and take action to put a stop to them. We must also begin imagining a different kind of future for ourselves and to start building that future together.
